Do Robot Vacuums Work on Thick Carpet?

They usually handle low pile, often handle medium pile and can struggle on deep plush or shag carpet. The main limits are traction, brush clearance and fiber resistance—not simply advertised suction.

A robot may climb onto thick carpet and complete its route while removing only surface debris. Deep cleaning requires effective agitation and airflow through the pile. Keep a regular vacuum for periodic deep cleaning when hair, grit or allergens settle below the surface.

Robot avoids dark carpet

Cliff sensors may interpret some dark patterns as a drop. Never cover safety sensors; use manufacturer-approved settings or exclude the rug.

Robot folds the rug edge

Use rug grippers or a map barrier. A thin flexible edge may be harder to climb than a slightly taller rigid transition.
