Raw Drive Capacity Is Not the Same as Usable Storage

RAID redundancy uses some drive capacity to protect against drive failure.

RAID is not a backup. RAID can help maintain access to data after certain drive failures, but it does not protect you from every risk, including accidental deletion, ransomware, theft, fire or catastrophic hardware failure.

How much NAS storage do I need for home use?

It depends on how much data you currently have and how quickly it is growing. A household with only a few terabytes of files may be well served by a 2-bay NAS, while families with large photo, video and media libraries may benefit from four bays or more.

How far ahead should I plan my NAS storage?

Planning roughly three to five years ahead is a useful starting point for many users. Rapidly growing photo, video or media libraries may justify planning farther ahead or choosing a NAS with more drive bays.

Should I fill every NAS bay immediately?

Not necessarily. Some NAS platforms allow you to begin with fewer drives and expand later. However, expansion rules vary by RAID type, drive size and NAS operating system, so check the manufacturer's requirements before choosing your initial configuration.

Is 8TB enough for a home NAS?

Eight terabytes can be plenty for documents, computer backups and moderate photo storage, but large video collections or rapidly growing families may outgrow it. Consider future growth rather than current usage alone.

Is 20TB enough for Plex?

That depends heavily on the quality and number of movies and TV episodes you store. High-bitrate 4K media can use substantially more space than compressed 1080p content. Estimate your annual media growth before selecting capacity.

Does RAID reduce available storage?

Usually yes. Redundant RAID configurations dedicate some capacity to mirroring or parity, so usable capacity is lower than the sum of the drive labels.

Does a larger NAS always mean faster performance?

No. Bay count mainly affects storage capacity and RAID flexibility. Processor performance, RAM, drive type, network speed and workload can all influence overall NAS performance.
