How to Clean Robot Vacuum Sensors Safely

Clean sensors help a robot navigate, avoid stairs, follow walls and find its dock. The safest routine is simple: power off, use a clean dry lint-free cloth, apply very light pressure and follow the model’s manual.

AVOID DAMAGE

Avoid household cleaners, solvents, abrasive pads and dripping cloths. Do not insert sharp tools into sensor openings, aim high-pressure air into the robot, or manually force a LiDAR turret to rotate. If the manual allows a slightly damp cloth for a particular surface, keep moisture away from seams and dry the area completely.

Eight-step cleaning routine

Stop the cleaning cycle

Return the robot to an accessible level floor, then shut it down using the manufacturer’s instructions.

Disconnect it from charging

Remove the robot from the dock. Unplug the dock before cleaning its contacts or sensor windows.

Remove loose dust first

Use a soft dry brush so grit is not dragged across glossy sensor windows.

Clean the top and front sensors

Wipe camera, obstacle and exposed LiDAR windows gently with a clean section of cloth.

Clean the underside

Place the robot on a soft stable surface. Wipe each cliff sensor without pressing into its window.

Check the bumper

Remove dust along its seam and confirm it moves inward and springs back evenly. Do not dismantle it unless instructed.

Clean dock sensors and contacts

With power disconnected, wipe dust from alignment windows and accessible charging contacts.

Inspect and test

Confirm everything is dry, reconnect the dock, power on and supervise a short run on level flooring.

Cliff sensors

Dust can create false drop readings. Gently wipe each transparent window. Never cover cliff sensors to make a robot cross dark carpet—doing so can remove stair protection.

TOP

LiDAR turret

Wipe only accessible exterior surfaces and windows. Do not spin, press or lift the turret by hand unless the manual explicitly instructs you to do so.

FRONT

Camera and obstacle sensors

Use a clean lens-safe cloth and minimal pressure. Fingerprints and film can affect image clarity and obstacle recognition.

SIDES

Wall sensors

Clean the side window and nearby bodywork so dust buildup does not interfere with edge-following distance.

  3. Check that it travels straight, slows near obstacles and follows walls normally.

  5. If the same error remains, restart or update the robot as officially instructed.
