LiDAR is usually best at building maps and navigating predictably. Cameras can help recognize small objects. Many premium robot vacuums combine both, so the real choice is often LiDAR only versus LiDAR plus a camera.
The difference in plain language
Measures distance
A rotating or solid-state laser system measures surrounding geometry and creates a floor plan. It is particularly useful for systematic paths, room maps and navigation in low light.

LiDAR and cameras are not opposites
A robot can use LiDAR to map the home and a front-facing RGB camera to classify nearby objects. Other systems combine structured light, infrared, time-of-flight sensors or lasers without recording conventional color images. Read the exact sensor description—“AI navigation” alone does not tell you what hardware is present.
Choose based on your home
Minimal, uncluttered home
Choose LiDAR only. Predictable mapping and room controls are more useful than object classification when floors are normally clear.
Children or many loose objects
Consider camera-assisted avoidance. It may reduce interruptions from toys, socks and cables, though pre-cleaning is still wise.
Pet accident concern
Prioritize proven object recognition. Verify that the exact model claims detection for the relevant hazard; a camera alone is not enough.
Privacy-sensitive household
Choose no RGB camera. Look for LiDAR plus structured light or other non-imaging obstacle sensors, and still review data policies.
Cleaning at night
LiDAR is a strong foundation. Camera recognition may need an LED or infrared assistance, while LiDAR mapping does not need room lights.
Very low furniture
Measure the full robot height. A retractable or turret-free design may matter more than the navigation label.
Before buying a camera-equipped robot
- Confirm whether the camera can be disabled independently.
- Check whether images are processed locally, in the cloud or both.
- Review account security and two-factor authentication options.
- Understand remote-view, microphone and two-way-audio controls.
- Check the manufacturer’s retention and deletion policy.
