NAS means Network Attached Storage. It is a purpose-built computer that holds one or more storage drives and connects to your home or office network. Instead of attaching a drive to only one computer, authorized phones, computers, TVs and apps can reach the same files.

A NAS can centralize backups, photos, documents, music and video. Many systems also run private-cloud, surveillance, media-server, collaboration and container applications.

What is inside a NAS?

Drive bays

Determine how many HDDs or SSDs the enclosure accepts and which RAID layouts are practical.

Processor

Handles file services, encryption, media applications, containers and other workloads.

Memory

Supports the operating system and apps. Heavier multitasking benefits from more RAM.

Network ports

1GbE is common; 2.5GbE and 10GbE can accelerate large transfers when the rest of the network supports them.

Depending on the model, NVMe SSDs may provide caching, application storage or a separate volume.

What RAID does

RAID combines drives into a storage pool. Depending on the layout, it can keep the NAS available after a drive fails, improve performance, or both.

  • RAID 1: two drives mirror the same data.
  • RAID 5: three or more drives; capacity roughly equals all but one drive.
  • RAID 6: four or more drives; capacity roughly equals all but two drives.
  • RAID 10: mirrored pairs with strong performance, using about half the raw capacity.

Common NAS questions

Do I need technical experience to use a NAS?

Basic home NAS products provide guided setup, but you still need to understand storage, user permissions, updates and backups. More advanced apps and remote access require more administration.

Can I access a NAS away from home?

Yes, most current NAS platforms offer remote-access options. Secure configuration matters: use updates, strong unique passwords, multi-factor authentication and the manufacturer’s recommended access method.

Does a NAS need the internet?

Local file access can work without internet service as long as the local network operates. Internet access is normally needed for remote access, cloud backup, app installation and updates.

Does a NAS include hard drives?

Many enclosures are sold diskless, while some listings include drives. Read the exact product title and package contents; do not assume displayed capacity is included.

Can I use ordinary desktop hard drives?

Compatibility depends on the NAS. NAS-rated drives are designed for continuous multi-drive operation, but the manufacturer’s exact compatibility list should be the deciding reference.

Can a NAS replace Google Drive, Dropbox or iCloud?

It can replace some storage, synchronization and sharing functions, but convenience, app integration and disaster resilience differ. Many people use a NAS together with selected cloud services.

Can a NAS stream Plex or Jellyfin?

Often yes. Direct playback is relatively light, while real-time transcoding depends on the NAS processor, media format, server software and client device.

Is a two-bay NAS enough?

It can be ideal for home backup and modest libraries. Choose more bays when you need higher usable capacity, more RAID choices, faster workloads or an easier expansion path.

How much electricity does a NAS use?

Consumption varies with processor, number and type of drives, activity and sleep settings. Check the manufacturer’s measured operating and standby figures for the exact configuration.

How long does a NAS last?

The enclosure and drives have different service lives. Drives are consumable components, so monitor health, replace failed units promptly and maintain independent backups throughout ownership.
